Newscast:  Peter Webb offered up some typically amazing material with a fantastic delivery for our Club and all the students to enjoy.

 

For the benefit of the students who are here they should understand that what Rotary calls the newscast really has nothing to do with the news.

 

That reminds me of the mother waking up her son to go to school in the morning and he said that he didn’t want to go to school. The mother asked why ...and he said the teachers hate me and the kids hate me.

She said “you have to go to school. “

He said “why”?

She told her son “first of all your 45 years old .....

And.....you’re the principal.”

 

Kids of all ages will be celebrating Halloween in the coming week.....

On Halloween a skeleton walks into a bar and the bartender says “what’ll you have?” The skeleton says I’ll have a beer.... and a mop. “

Two guys walking home after Halloween party and of course they cut through the cemetery and they heard a strange tapping noise and they saw a guy chiseling away at a tombstone. They said “ you scared the daylights out of us ....what are you doing working here in the middle of the night?”  He replied “these fools miss spelled my name. “

 

The scariest haunted houses for high school students is one where out of each room jumps an apparition dressed as a parent .....

One screams “where are you going to college?“ The next screams “how are you going to pay for it“? The other ones screams “ what are you going to major in“?

Another screams "how are you going to get a job with that kind of major”?

Guatemala Trip announcement

John Kelly’s 90^th Birthday October 29^th (yesterday). 

Fun Run—Per Alan Talansky, we raised $44k for Scholarship fund. Thanks to all involved, sponsors, PAL.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

International Polio Day—Chuck Osborne informed us that only 14 cases of polio remain, distributed among 3 countries.  Almost eradicated!

 

 

Belize Project for Rotary International—Rod Linhares discussed the town or Corozal, about 10k people. The goal is to raise funds to help them pay for secondary school, which must be paid in advance at $500/child. The town of Corozal provides $250 to match any $250 donation to send a child to secondary school.  The social impacts of this are huge for the country and the kids.  Make checks payable to Rotary International.

 

Youth in Government Day:  Many people were thanked, as was San Mateo Rotary for our involvement in the project for the last 80 years!  All the local high schools were mentioned (I hope I didn’t miss one here):  Aragon, Serra, SM Middle College, Hillsdale, Drew, Burlingame, San Mateo.

Sheila Canzian introduced Thomas Lee and Andrea Martinez Vera, along with big thank you to the principals at the high schools for keeping the students involved!  And also thanks to all the folks who helped plan the event and other club mentors.

 

Julia Klein set the stage for the students’ efforts in the context of the SM General Plan. This involves discussing the city through 2040, including land use, safety, transportation, community, housing, health care, climate change.

 

 

Team A Students, Tom and Lena, appreciate our diversity but San Mateo is very congested. They’d like to see some interactive art exhibits, more benches, underground parking, more affordable high-density housing, more food services near the high schools and more retail near the neighborhoods. 

 

 

Team B Students, Nick & Leila, think we need sustainable cost effective transportation, electric buses and autonomous buses. They also think we need free public transit in 2040. They’d like to see live/work spaces for local business owners, a live ampitheatre in park areas, study spaces, game rooms, plazas for community engagement and places for students to congregate responsibly. They think parks and public spaces could be more engaging and create more unified communities with an open square/plaze type environment. They also think we need to expand housing “upward and outward”, higher density, 75% energy renewability by 2040. San Mateo should be “affordable”.
