In response to the ravages of illness, Susan read a moving passage that reflected on what a miracle it is to be alive. Are you struggling? Hurting? Count your blessings. There are always blessing to be counted. Studies show that when you see the positive and count your blessings, you do far better. Today we are blessed with the Hillsdale Effect and for all that they do!

Announcements:
Mike Peterson announced the success of the Raffle and thanked the scholarship committee and all those who sold and purchased tickets. It was a wonderful success, with $42,000 raised! He thanked Boston Private for hosting and all who had contributed to the gift certificates.  Stats:
605 tickets sold
75% of Rotarians participated.
The most sold were by:
Nancy Stanton with  47
Anne LeClair with 23
Luther Izmirian with 16
 
The winners were:
3rd prize, Bill Walter
2nd prize, Larry Ivich
1st prize, Anne Campbell. She will use the $ to help pay for her kids in college, but will also make a donation to the scholarship fund. Thank you, Anne!

    PROGRAM:
     
    Brian Sullivan introduced the Hillsdale Effect participants of 2017/2018, and their leader, Greg Lance. This is the 8th year of the program.
    The students had a pretty fun way of introducing the amount of money they had raised to date, by incrementally showing the number and pretending that not much had been raised--when in fact they have raised $10,831.79—the most raised to date!
     
    They work with Namaste who distributes the microloans to women in Guatemala and who provide a business advisor to those who receive a loan. 98% - 99% of loans are paid back.
     
    Over the past 8 years, Hillsdale Effect has donated over $61,000. 100 women have benefited from the loans. 84 students have made a trek to Guatemala to participate. 12 students are going this year.
     
    Congratulations, Hillsdale Effect!
     
    Since the founding of the Hillsdale Effect, the students have organized an Interact Club. In addition, they provide:
    Support to the Samaritan House where they adopt family and provide them with food and gifts at Christmas and serve food once a month. 
     
    All in all it was energizing to hear from the students about their enthusiasm and support of the program and the things they have gained from participating in it!
