President Joan opened her first official meeting at a podium adorned with sunflowers presented by Past President Kitty. Past President Tony did the Newscast & continued his tradition of welcoming the new President with interesting facts about their names.
Tony definitely rose to the occasion this year, informing President Joan and San Mateo Rotarians that her name "implies a certain holiness, benevolence, & leniency." Tony also noted that those named Joan are interested in understanding the mysteries of life which should stand President Joan in good stead as she navigates through the mysteries of a year at the helm of the Rotary Club of San Mateo.
As he wished her a great year as Club President, Tony reviewed some famous Joans, including Joan of Arc, Joan of Navarre, Joan Crawford, Joan Collins, Joan Sutherland, Joan Rivers, and Joan Baez. That's a lot of Joans! He also shared a few bon mots from Joan Rivers, who was acclaimed for her sense of humor. Some samples?
I knew I was an unwanted baby when I saw my bath toys
were a toaster & a radio.
I've had so much plastic surgery, when I die they will
donate my body to Tupperware.
I hate housework. You make the beds, you do the dishes, and then six
months later, you have to start all over again.
Tony concluded by wishing President Joan well in the year ahead and telling her, "Please don't worry President Joan. Unlike your namesakes, we're not expecting you to be a saint, queen, actress, author, opera diva, comedian or folk singer. Although it might be fun if you were one, a few, or all of these during the year."
Matt Lau, the illusory Club Secretary, actually made an appearance at the first official meeting of the new Rotary Year. The reason? To announce he recently tied the knot & is now officially married. The happy couple honeymooned in Taiwan & Japan. Congratulations to Matt & his bride on this happy news.
Birthday Chair Carey Gorgolinski arrived with a bouncy balloon bouquet and a birthday cake to celebrate Members with July birthdays. Rotarians engaged in an exuberant rendition of "Happy Birthday" and then enjoyed birthday cake.
