Fun Run – this is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year; Alan Talansky emphasized that every dollar is important and can change a young person's life.
San Mateo Chamber of Commerce’s annual Bacon & Brew – Cheryl Angeles invites everyone to come out for the event on September 23rd from 11am to 7pm. The event center parking proceeds will be shared 50/50 with SM Rotary so let Cheryl know if you want to volunteer.
Jeff Lowenstein reminded us that there is now a link available to make a donation to the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief that will go through our club to the designated organization that the Rotary Clubs and District in Houston have aligned with to provide support. When you click on the link on our website, once you fill in all your info, go down to the field "Select Donation Designation Here" and chose Disaster Relief from the drop down menu.

Martin Harband introduced
Dr. Miriam Zimmerman, Professor Emerita at Notre Dame de Namur University.
Miriam took a moment to light a candle in honor of Fr. Wayne Maro (d. 12/01/2003), who conceptualized the class at NDNU in 1995.
Miriam started with a quiz to assess our Jewish IQ, and we discovered that we know more than we realized about Jewish culture and influence. Miriam went on to describe the political, cultural, and Catholic Church environment leading to the Holocaust. How could it happen? Miriam called it the “unholy trinity” of Religious [intolerance], Racism, and [political] Propaganda.

- Holocaust (Auschwitz) survivor Linda Libusha Beder (1924-2010).
- Fr. Emile Shoufani, Jewish-Arab, director St. Joseph Seminary HS in Nazareth. He received the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education 2003.
- National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education at Seton Hill University in Pennsylvania.
- Dr. Hans Münch.
- Bishop of Münster Clemens August Von Galen.
- Dr. Werner Lowenstein, who wrote about the Demise of the Medical Profession.
Professor Miriam Zimmerman issued an invitation to a special presentation of “A Reason to Remember” on September 15th at Notre Dame de Namur University. See enclosed flyer for more information.
Dr. Miriam Zimmerman's bio:
Miriam Zimmerman has been a “Catholic educator” for over 30 years; at the University of San Francisco and Notre Dame de Namur University. She has degrees in Communication from Northwestern University and San Francisco State. Her doctorate in counseling psych is from USF. She is also a graduate of the International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. She has taught the Holocaust class at NDNU since 1995 and writes a column for the National Jewish Post & Opinion under the byline, “Holocaust Educator.” She is on the board of the Helen and Joe Farkas Center for the Study of the Holocaust in Catholic Schools and, since 1998, a member of the San Mateo Jewish-Palestinian Living Room Dialogue Group. On a personal note, she is the daughter of a German-Jewish refugee who did not speak English when he emigrated to the U.S. in 1937. Miriam and her husband, Richard, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next year. They are the parents of three married children and have six grandchildren.
