Our speaker 4/2 was Diego Ochoa is in his 3rd year as Superintendent of San Mateo/Foster City School District. He spoke of  completing  $500 million construction projects across the district under budget.  They have reduced the incidence of depression/drug use/conflict by putting counselors,social workers and others in the middle schools.  The motto is "when they're ready(to talk).....we're ready"(personnel to listen and help).

Before third grade kids "learn to read"...after 3rd grade they need to "read to learn"  Early intervention to ensure 3rd graders can read is impactful, and poorer families often need more help.  We have 84% of kindergarden children reading at grade level!   Police are back on campus for safety.  Cell phones are stored during school hours, and kids are more focused and attentive.
