Bernie Mellott had no Sunshine report, but Bob Binn later reported seeing Bob Whitehill, who is now walking without a cane or assistance following his double knee replacement. 

 

THIS JUST IN: Dick DeLuna, the Energizer Bunny, had a heart stint put in this week and is up and around living his usual life in the fast lane.

 

Cheryl Angeles brought as her guest Penny Lundberg of Science for Scientists.

 

Visitors included Sonia Ibanez from the San Leandro Club and Sudhir Gupta from the Rotary Club of Moradabad, India.  Sudhir is involved in many great causes for the underserved youth in India. Website: ssgfoundation.in.  Sudhir was introduced by Sunny Arora.

 

President Bruce announced that committee lists are out and corrections are welcomed and thanked Chris Eckert for printing the books for us. 

 

Rosemary Azem asked all who plan to buy tickets to benefit Rotary International to please turn in tickets and money. 

 

Jake Nguyen joined the President’s Club after winning a week at Pebble Beach.

 

The Fun Run was announced again.

 

Paul Rogerville reminded all of the October 13 Summer of Love event at Dave Bennett’s house. A good auctioneer is needed for the event.

 

Bill Kenney was not fined, but should be called upon at a future meeting, since he is going to be honored with a big award at San Francisco State.

 

Jim Engel made some of us shed a tear as he said goodbye and announced that he and Lynn are moving to Tucson.  He vowed to come back to help with the barbecue and the raffle, though--and to be here often during the summers. We'll miss seeing your face every week, Jim.  (Try to keep the Coors Light truck drivers busy in Tucson!!)

Vishal Jangla of the County DA’s office gave us a scary update on email compromise and ransomware.  I’ll include a few points, but his entire presentation is available at: da.smc.gov/protectyourself.

 

Among the points made by Vishal:

*More than 4,000 compromises have taken place daily since January 1, 2016.

*As many as a third of small/medium sized businesses have been hit and one in every five of those has had to shut down.

*Ransomware has cost the economy $75 million in lost productivity.

*Never put your date of birth or SS# in your Linked In account.

*Leaks of user names and passwords can create a master list of 700 million target emails available to anyone on the internet. 

*Never put a copy of your SS# or any ID in your emails

*Use a password app.

*Enable a two-step authentication on your email browser.

*Verify any changes to accounts payable, phone anyone making a request and have more than one person sign off on any large transfer.

*Ransomware is the process bad actors use to take over your system and they are introduced by a Trojan Horse email.

*Protect yourself by frequently backing up your data and having a recovery plan for your “crown jewels”.

*Isolate your backups form network access

*Consider purchasing cyber insurance.

*Email compromise is a sophisticated scam targeting businesses that regularly perform wire transfer payments. 

*Bad guys get access to a decision maker’s email, gather info on accounts payable and then execute their scams.
