Kudos to our newest Paul Harris Award recipients: Nancy Stanton, Gary Hunt, Paul Karson, and President Joan. Past President John presented them with their new Paul Harris pins at the September 10th meeting. Nancy Stanton was first up with her RI gift total now between $3,000 to $4,000. Paul Karson was also honored at the $3,000 to $4,000 level. President John then asked Gary Hunt to come forward "as a VIP kind of guy" in recognition of Gary's generosity to the tune of $6,000 to $7,000.

San Mateo Rotarians welcomed Craig Forner, a presenter on behalf of the American Foundation for Prevention of Suicide. A former Serra teacher & Catholic Priest, Craig gave San Mateo Rotarians important information about the symptoms of suicide and how to help someone who is thinking about killing themselves.
Craig noted the importance of making sure mental health care is readily available to those contemplating suicide. Both Craig's father & brother committed suicide so he spoke from personal experience as a Loss Survivor.
A key takeaway from Craig's presentation was his observation that "the most important thing you can put between a person and suicide is time." In addition, Craig noted these ways to help when confronted with someone considering suicide:
Watch for suicide signs, including talk, behavior changes, and mood. Craig encouraged Rotarians to "trust your gut and assume you're the only person who is going to reach out."
Talk to the individual in private, ask them directly about whether they're having suicidal thoughts, and assist them in seeking help.
Most importantly, if you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, call the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 988 for immediate assistance.
