ROTARY PICNIC

The sun was bright, the hotdogs were hot, the brats were fraught and the meeting was cordially called to order by President Bean.

Central Park is perhaps the most treasured and visited public place in San Mateo. It is valued by city residents as a place to stroll, exercise, spend time with friends and family, or attend a community event.
Purchased by the city in 1922, Central Park is San Mateo's first municipal park. The 16.2-acre site is a significant space to the community due to its location, size, history and variety of amenities.

Welcome Back Bob

Bob Campbell attended his first meeting since his stroke. Spinnings captured his remark that he felt like the Thai soccer boys trapped in a cave, only his lasted much longer. Glad you are back and looking very well.

New Member

Mike Peterson introduced and presented a fictional orange badge to new member Michael Kelly, new General Manager of Recology. Mike introduced himself as a loyal local. He graduated from Serra, attended CSM and attended San Diego State. He and his wife, Cheryl, have three children. He joined to give back to the community and to serve.

Visiting Rotarians

M. Onat Topal is visiting from Ankara, Turkey. Mr. Topal is here to scout for a location for his young company. His company is developing artificial intelligence software to replicate lawyers; robotic lawyers are even in prospect. We've heard the terms artificial and robotic mentioned in the context of lawyers, but never with such enthusiasm as Mr. Topal exhibited.

Happy Birthday John Root

It was his actual birthday. Three score and ten.

Kudos to Cooks

Jim Engel, Mark Avelar, Dave Skromme, Dave Bennett, Carol Boes and Mike Peterson were recognized for their barbecue volunteerism.

Update on Central Park

Parks director Sheila Canzian took advantage of the location in Jim Chalmers Rotary Grove to point out areas due to be updated and upgraded under the city's 10-year Central Park improvement plan. Rotary Grove will be replaced with two tennis courts and relocated adjacent to a new plaza near 9th Ave. The 9th Ave. garage will be depressed below ground and replaced with aforementioned plaza, conceived as a gathering and event place as well as an entrance and area in which to linger. The Japanese Garden will be untouched, as will the pump house entrance and the ball fields, however the bleachers will be reduced.

Ukranian Club Connection in Toronto

"Dear Bruce Bean, President RC San Mateo, D5150
Today I completed the report to RC Lviv members about participation in RI Convention Toronto. Our Club members would like to renew communications with RC San Mateo which was one of RC Lviv Sponsor Clubs in 1992-94.
RC Lviv, RC Lviv Ratusha from D2232 and RC Weinheim from Germany, RC Sydney-Holroyd from Australia were participants of RI Foundation Grand for the help in creation of Haematopoietic Steam Cell Transplantation Center in Lviv. The current RF Grant should be completed soon. We are looking for the second step to support the actual creation of a center.  A special letter for the potential cooperation of RC Lviv with RC San Mateo is being prepared and send to you.
Next year the RI Convention will be in Hamburg, Germany. That is 1300 km to drive via the German autoban through the Poland to Lviv. Or may be to use airflight from Hamburg to Lviv via Warsaw or Munich. That will be good opportunity to visit us in Lviv city. Or such visit of RC San Mateo may take other time depending your time and possibilities. We'll be happy to meet you and RC San Mateo members in West Ukraine.
Our new Club President Andrii Sybirnyy, doctor of sciences, active member of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, the world scientific leader in area of yeasts, is in long vojages all over the world now. He will be back to lviv at the end of July. So now this   letter is copied to Club Secretary Hennadii Krojchyk, as well to Club Past President Serhii Lobozynskii.

Yours in Rotary,
Myroslav Gavryliv
Charter President of RC Lviv"
