Why is he the winningest coach is Serra's history?
He was a notable de La Salle player and a college standout. As a coach he focuses on unity. He wants his players to feel like brothers, and he has these young men tell their teammates that they love them... hard for men to do. They do Draymond (Green) drills where handshakes and backpats become a unity-building habit.
He is proud of the teams 3.67 GPA average...with 25 players over 4.0. Patrick was valedictorian at de La Salle. Players know they can skip a practice for academic needs.
To keep players healthy and prevent head injuries they tackle to the ground only in games and wear the latest headgear and never have 2 practices a day. Playing less football can mean better football.
Over the years high school sports have changed by improved fitness, training and skill of the athletes. There is much more pressure on the kids.
Social media is the distraction and can create unreal expectations. College recruiting is complicated by fake offers and non-commitable offers. Name/Image/Likeness money is not a Serra issue, but it's changing all sports.
