Fellow Rotarian Arlene Kace shared helpful information about Mental Health Awareness Month at our May 16th meeting. Arlene let San Mateo Rotarians know Mental Health Awareness Month began in 1949 as an effort to fight the stigma often associated with mental health issues, provide support, and advocate on behalf of individuals and families grappling with mental health difficulties.
The US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy recently released an advisory declaring loneliness and lack of connection a new public health epidemic in the United States. He urged Americans to become more aware of these feelings experienced by so many, especially post-Pandemic. You can read his advisory at:
Rotary International President-Elect Gordon R. McInally has established mental health awareness as a priority for his year ahead as RI President. More and more people around the world are struggling with mental health issues, and McInally believes Rotary can play a vital role by helping people understand seeking help is not a sign of weakness. President-Elect Gordon has stated, "Nothing could be further from the truth. Reaching out for help is courageous - and continuing on a path toward wellness is even more so."
Our speakers this week will be Officer Mark Garcia and Clinician Briana Fair who will share Star Vista's crisis support work. Our Community Service Committee recently awarded all of this year's community funding to Star Vista.

Villanueva Honored!
On April 29th at the District 5150 Conference Tony Villanueva received the Cliff Dochterman Award honoring a Rotarian who gives exemplary service to Rotary and Scouting. Tony received a standing ovation from the audience and enjoyed the evening in the company of his family. Well-deserved!

Plans are underway for the Third Annual San Mateo Rotary Classic and Custom Car Show. On May 16th Ray Iverson announced this year's Car Show set for September 2nd at CSM. Early registration is already underway. Registration info can be found on the San Mateo Rotary website. Should be a blast!
