This Week's Speaker

Anatol Shmelev
Robert Conquest Curator for Russia, Ukraine, & Eurasia
The Hoover Institution - Stanford University

Recording the History of the War in Ukraine

join us this Tuesday for Dr. Shmelev's presentation

We're pleased to welcome Dr. Anatol Shmelev, a renowned archivist and expert on Russian politics and history as this week's speaker.  Dr. Shmelev has been at the Hoover Institution since 1997 and is primarily responsible for gathering Russian archival material for the Hoover collection. Scholars widely recognize the Hoover's Russian history archive as the best in the world outside of Russia.  Dr. Shmelev has traveled to the Ukraine since the onset of the current war with the goal of preserving historical documentation.
Because of the prevalence of social media, collecting archival materials is challenging since so much now resides in the Cloud on such sites as Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, X, and Ukrainian social media apps.  Dr. Shmelev will share his experiences as a visitor to the war zone and will discuss how he goes about gathering archival material from social media as well as other sources. This should be an illuminating and fascinating first-hand account of the work of an archivist visiting a war zone.
